Poker Styles – Playing-Styles in Poker

Poker players come in all shapes and sizes and you will find it hard to find two players playing the same style. Every poker player has their own playing style and will also be likely to act differently under pressure. Although there are so many poker playing styles, players can be put into basic sets. This grouping of players helps you keep track of the type of opponent you are facing enabling you to get a much better read on what they are most likely to do in a given situation.

The Different Types of Poker Players

Putting players into their respective groups is very simple and can be broken down into two stages. Firstly you must determine whether the player is playing Tight or Loose:

A Tight player will very rarely see a flop, he will typically wait until he has been dealt a premium hand of good pocket cards that have a strong chance of winning.

The Loose player will likely play a wide variety of hands and will on most occasions see the flop, the more a player enters into pots the “looser” they are said to be.

The second part of deciding what types of poker players you have around your table is determining whether they play an Aggressive or Passive Poker Style. The Aggressive player will be making large bets and strong raises right from the off and will likely want to be in the thick of the action. The Passive player will not be raising as much, but will be inclined to check or call instead.

Once you have decided on the playing styles of the player be it a Tight-Aggressive player or a Loose-Passive player we can then put them into their group. From this you can see that there are four main types of poker player and each one has its own individual name.

Loose – Passive (The Calling Station)

This type of player will likely play most of the hands dealt to him as long as he can check or call his way into the flop. If your bets are not big enough he is likely to flat call you, beware.

Loose – Aggressive (The Maniac)

Working out what hand to put this guy on can be almost impossible, he will play lots of hands and will be betting and raising all over the place usually leaving you without a clue to what he has.

Tight – Passive (The Rock)

The coolest customer of them all, he will wait for the right cards before entering the pot and then will check and call you to the end. Very difficult to play against as he will only have top cards in his hand.

Tight – Aggressive (Tricky or Tag)

Probably the most common of poker playing styles, this is by far the most dangerous. This player is likely to wait for a good hand and then bombard the table with large bets and raises. As you know they will likely have good pocket cards and it can be difficult to get in on the action.

Most poker players will fit into one of these poker playing styles and you will easily be able to determine which player goes where from your table. Which style is the best? The answer to that is that they all have good sides and bad sides, what makes a great poker player is one that can move from one type to another without anyone noticing and then catching the other players out.
