Getting Away From Bluffs

Bluff

Playing the bluff is not for the feint hearted, timid player. You must be able to show strength and convince your opponents that what you have as your pocket cards are good enough to take any of them down.

When we play the bluff our main object is to raise or bet our opponents out of the pot and this usually means putting a lot of chips on the table, this can make getting away from a bluff hard.

In most cases this will work, maybe pre-flop or if your called into a flop, the usual move would be another high bet or raise to make your opponents think your strong hand just got stronger. The problems arise when one of your opponents then calls you again or even raises you.

Now the pressure is back on you as you will likely have no hand at all as you were bluffing from the start. You must now read your opponent, is he bluffing too, has he seen through your bluff or has he hit one of the cards flopped beating your hand.

You have already invested in the pot and walking away now means giving up all those chips, but that is the correct play, You must fold as in most cases you will be beat and coming over the top “all in” to scare him off may just lose you all your chips.

If you just take it on the chin, lay down your cards and walk away from the hand at least you will have some chips left to fight another round.
