Cashgame Beginner Lesson 1 – Choosing Your Table

This is the first step and a huge part of choosing a cash game, getting it right can make a big difference. First off look around the table, there is usually a limit that you are permitted to bring to the table, should there be any players sat with a lot more than this then leave, you will be bullied about as they have a huge chip advantage. You should also choose a table that has on it the amount of players you are comfortable playing with, if you like lots of players then look for a nearly full table, if you prefer smaller amounts get a table that has a 5 or 6 player maximum.

Cashgame Lesson 2  - Tread Carefully, Take Your Time.

Don’t rush into things when you find your table, remember you wont know how long these guys have been sat there playing. Get the feel for how the game is playing, see if it’s a fast paced game with lots of betting or slower more subdued one. Check out the other players, watch what kind of cards they are playing and try not to get drawn in to the action too quickly, remember the blinds will be staying the same so taking your time to suss things out is not going to cost you anything, diving in might.

Cashgame Lesson 3 - Play To Your Limits

When choosing a cash game always make sure that you don’t have all of your cash on the table. The general rule of thumb is to play a table that is 10% of your total bankroll. This will mean that should you have $100 in your account, then you want to be looking for a game that lets you bring $10 to the table. What this does is take the pressure off you, remember the higher the stakes, the higher the skill of your opponents.

Cashgame Lesson 4 - Don’t Be Scared To Leave

We cant all be Doyle Brunson, and there will come a time that we have to admit that the people we are playing with are better than us. Some players will not admit this and try everything to win some hands but will usually end up broke. If its not going your way just leave, on any given poker site there are hundreds of other tables so go find one that suits you. There is absolutely no shame in leaving, there is in losing all your cash though.

Cashgame Lesson 5 -Enjoy Yourself

Most important of all(!), enjoy yourself. If for some reason you find the game boring you, then move to another table or if its not the table its you then just stop playing and come back when your in the mood otherwise you can be sure you will be watching your chips fade away. Choosing a cash game is very simple as long as you set yourself an idea of what you want from the game, get this wrong and you could be in deeper than you can handle.
